“Be A Supermom” Vaccination Campaign Materials

The Centers for Disease Control and the Association of State and Territorial Health Officials partnered with the American College of Nurse-Midwives to create a campaign to promote vaccination in expectant mothers. They wanted something that would engage and help educate mothers on how vaccination could protect them AND their unborn/newborn child from the flu and other diseases.

The initial grant from the CDC provided funds to develop content for posters and informational flyers in both English and Spanish. Working with the ACNM team, I pitched the idea of using superhero imagery to convey the concept of shielding/defending families from viruses, etc. The team liked the idea, and wanted to make sure our Supermoms represented a variety of ethnicities and body types to appeal to a wide range of clientele. I began working with a talented illustrator, Abby Hellstrom, to create the characters.

Abby submitted lineart for approval before coloring the characters, and we had the idea to use that art to create coloring pages that clinics could hand out to siblings who were accompanying their mother to prenatal appointments. ACNM made the flyers and coloring pages free to download from their website, and clinics could request posters to be mailed to them free of charge, thanks to the CDC grant.

The following year, ACNM was given additional grant money to develop an Arabic-language poster as well. Abby adapted her characters to represent more culturally appropriate modest dress, and we toned down the colors from the original to coordinate.
